Recap of "Bent Crayon presents: Function"
Submitted by chris on Mon, 06/13/2011 - 11:13pmAnother fun trip to Cleveland and I'm wondering why I ever moved away. The more time passes, the more I appreciate Cleveland and moreover, appreciate Ohio. Columbus has a steady house scene with Quality at Basil and accompanied mainstream events at places like BoMA, but we central Ohioans have to travel or wait patiently for real techno (seen and heard occasionally at Saturday's are Squared at Bristol Bar). But in Ohio, we have good people and good people who love techno. That's a pretty good combo. A better combo? More good people who love good techno. I'm thankful for the posse in Cleveland supporting the cause.
Stat Touch Supper Club where Vinyl Project setup to stream live last Saturday, meet Function AKA Dave Sumner of Sandwell District and 1 Auxy AKA James Morris of Akron's Tek-Know Productions hosted in hot series of Bent Crayon events planned for this year. The audience got a fine techno fix to last us a few months. My first time seeing (and meeting James), he ran a great mix of warm-up tracks for Function using all vinyl, setting the stage over a length of 90 minutes. Function took the stage at 12:30 AM bringing 1 Auxy's set into hardness that we had been waiting for. The night was not without its technical faults. Barring a brief sub-bass drop-out in the basement and my own live-stream failing about 20 minutes short of Function's complete set (my fedora macbook overheated... I hate macbooks), the night was all smiles and was certainly one of appreciation for both Function and 1 Auxy's performances.
Again, stay tuned for further Bent Crayon events to be featured on the Vinyl Project stream this year. I have whispers of completing the Sandwell District trifecta and other techno to be pit-stopping in Cleveland. Follow the links below for downloads of the night's events.
23:00 - 00:30 - 1 Auxy, Opening DJ Set
00:30 - 02:00 - Function, Live Set
Recap of "Bent Crayon presents: Glimpse"
Submitted by chris on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 2:34amI'm back in Columbus after a weekend of extensive Ohio travel. Friday's event in Cleveland was a great start to the weekend. Glimpse arrived in Cleveland shortly before his set and was thankfully able to squeeze in some needed rest after his full day of U.K. to North America travel. I suppose a weekend of driving around OH doesn't compare, so I'll quit my griping.
Jimi Tsang opened the show with a rare 2 hour set on the turntables. After he warmed up the basement, Glimpse took control at 12:30AM and treated folks to a 90 minute live set. Truly great stuff from both performers. Thanks to Bent Crayon for organizing the event and of course all the Clevelanders et. al. who may have travelled to support the event at Touch Supper Club.
In other rarities, The Vinyl Project was onhand to stream the event live. Though the streaming broadcast on Friday was largely a secret until the night's music started, we were able to string together a great proof of concept. In turn, we're happy to be able to repeat the broadcast for further performances. And if that's not enough, we have the audio to deliver post-haste.
22:45 - 00:45 - Jimi Tsang, Opening DJ Set
00:45 - 2:15 - Glimpse, Live Performance
02:15 - 03:00 - Jimi Tsang, Cool Down Farewell
Thanks again to everyone for coming out. Check back soon for more Bent Crayon events to be featured on The Vinyl Project.
Installing Washtub on Ubuntu
Submitted by chris on Fri, 08/14/2009 - 4:24pmA special thanks to Aditya from Institute Teknologi Bandung for his patience. Without his correspondence, I probably couldn't have created such a comprehensive how to for installing Washtub. With Aditya being in Indonesia and me being in the US, it sometimes took 12 hours for us to read each other's responses. What follows here is the meat from our conversation and the main process for getting Washtub installed on Ubuntu. This is also published in the washtub svn repo at:
