Thanks for Giving Us Fedora

Fedora 10 hit the net today with its General Availability Release, or rather the un-beta version. I posted earlier this summer that the version 9 release passed me by as I noted its two month anniversary. There's plenty of resources out there for the first timer, but I wanted to write about the handy yum upgrade process for those of us who can't afford a clean wipe every six months when the Fedora Project releases its official versions.

The Sour Taste Of Humble Pie

A few months ago I took a stab at Mixxx, the open source dj mixing software, and was pleasantly surprised to find that my review had drawn some interest. The page views soared and the comment section actually showed some activity. "Nice", I thought. Until small details on my part began to show some neglect. Neglect is fine when it's just you and your friends sharing some space. But when outsiders start to see neglect, it's a much different story. If
read more

Jason Nagy - teen dis ease

I called on Nagy to deliver some of his mixes at least two years ago. And fruition comes, finally. Here's a tasty sampler from the three mixes he posted from this past week. "Teen Dis Ease" is a tight mix of 4:4's and breaks, smoothly combined to show that one doesn't have to dominate the other. Though it's only 13 minutes in length, this shorty mix is proof that Jason has originality and depth to his music selection. If you like this...

Software Review: Mixxx Open Source DJ Software

Credit is due to CDMusic for introducing me to the Mixxx Open Source DJ Software last week. Yes, that's three X's in mixxx and I assume it would have been four X's had mixxx.org been registered already like mixx and mix were. My first impression to CDMusic's post was WOW; free software, no additional (proprietary) hardware and compatible with vinyl control. That's pretty much all I ever wanted.

Carnival Augusta Posted Yesterday

The latest mix show turned out quite well. I have been listening to small parts since the recording and I am, at the risk of sounding blah, very impressed. Not so much by the mixes, but the mix possibilities of old and new spanning close to 10 years is quite encouraging for the techno circle. Villalobos has really stuck to his beat style since his start and still manages to create a new space with each song. The plain white triple played twice on this mix is so similar to his early perlon and still new to the ears.&nbs
read more

New Records For Me

I paid a visit to Ohio's premiere record shop, Cleveland's The Bent Crayon, this week. It's probably been close to 5 years since I last visited the shop. SInce moving to Columbus I haven't had enough opportunities to stop by. Of course the owner is always willing to mail your goods direct, but a visit to the shop opens up a plethora of backlog. I spent a good three hours sifting and listening and choosing. Sure it's been a while, but the store has much to choose from and most of it is well worth the search.

This week I am tackling a conversion from my outdated server, currently running FC4, to new hardware which is now running CentOS 5. So no big deal right? I have certainly been dreading the move, because of all the fun I've had installing osprey/permaseed in the past. I am happy to say that the conversion WAS in fact NO BIG DEAL. Here' s what I did in case anyone else ever needs some advice on the process.

Assumptions:

I came across a strange realization this morning as I started looking for something tech related to accomplish on my Saturday. A few months back, I wrote "Ubuntu is Pretty Darn Cool" and it's certain that my admiration for Ubuntu has prevented me from continuing my long history with Fedora.

Columbus Gets Live For The Raconteurs

Yesterday "The Raconteurs" came blowing through Columbus with quite an impressive (and original) showing. On their trip down from 2 days in Detroit, Columbus was a mere pit stop (I hate a Monday night show) before heading out to Cincinnatti, St. Louis and then to Bonnarroo. According to their website, the tour dates seem to continue unending through out the remainder of the summer.

I have been lurking around Soul Clap for the past two weeks. Lurking really encompasses just a few things: I added them as a favorite on technorati, I read a bunch of posts on the site, I subscribed to their podcast and I actually listened to the podcasts.
